What is physical therapy?
At the core of Physical therapy is the understanding of human movement. Inherent with this understanding is the interaction of different systems and parts of the body in generating and controlling this movement. Clients seek the services of a physical therapist (PT) for many reasons. The most common reasons involve restoring function, mobility, and relieving pain. Physical therapy also plays a crucial role in physical disability prevention as well as promoting optimal performance in athletes.
A physical therapist is trained to examine, diagnose, and treat the immediate problem, as well as provide preventative measures for the future. An examination consists of a thorough patient history as well as physical examination. A diagnosis will include the area generating pain as well as remote areas that may be causing that dysfunction or preventing it from healing. Based on this diagnosis, the physical therapist develops a treatment plan, which may include patient education, manual therapy, massage, exercise, and treatment modalities such as traction, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound among others. The patient’s response is monitored and treatment is adjusted as the patient moves through the recovery process. A physical therapist will also make appropriate referrals to other health practitioners when appropriate. |
How can physical therapy help me?
Physical therapy is an effective means of enhancing the body’s own healing capacity. Your body’s ability to heal itself is really quite remarkable but at times the healing process can stall or fall short of complete recovery. Physical therapy augments and provides direction for this healing process. Through non-invasive and non-pharmacological means, physical therapy can shorten the inflammatory process, decrease pain, improve mobility and strength, restore biomechanical symmetry, and provide for stronger tissue once the healing process is complete. Preventative measures are also a strong part of rehabilitation.
What do I need to do to get started?
In the state of Michigan physical therapists can evaluate and provide treatment to clients without a prescription. However, if you are using health insurance to pay for your physical therapy services, a referral may be needed depending upon which insurance you have. The referral can come from a medical doctor (MD), doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO), podiatrist (DPM), dentist (DDS), or Physician Assistant (PA).
Contact us today to get started. We can schedule your first appointment and answer any questions that you have. If you have questions about your health insurance coverage, we can assist with the verification process or you can contact your insurance provider directly.

What will I do on my first visit?
Plan on coming 10 minutes before the start of your appointment. This allows time to complete your new patient paperwork. If you prefer, these forms can be printed from the New Patient Forms section of our website.
Your first visit will consist of a thorough history and physical examination, which is conducted by a licensed physical therapist. Your therapist will review their findings with you and develop a plan unique to your goals and situation. Treatment is initiated at the initial visit and you will be given exercises to perform in-between treatment sessions. Following the initial session we ask that you schedule two weeks ahead and let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you are unable to make your scheduled appointment.

Does insurance cover physical therapy?
Once issued a referral for physical therapy, you have the legal right to see any licensed physical therapist. Because insurance participation is an important part of this decision, we have listed the insurance companies which we participate with:
Kingsley Physical Therapy is a provider for most insurance plans, including:
• Medicare
• Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
• Messa
• Cofinity
• Aetna

Ultimately, it is your responsibility to know your insurance plan and coverage. However, we take pride on our exceptional customer service and will work with you to make sure that your portion of the physical therapy expense fits your budget and expectations.
